It’s time to dot the i’s and cross the t’s! We try to understand exactly what kind of stereotypes of masculinity and femininity are transmitted by the agents of socialization. What impact do these stereotypes have on our lives? Dotting the I’s is a volunteer project by CAAB, supported by the IPDJ program «Namorar com Fair Play».

For a week, 3 volunteers aged between 14 and 16 developed several activities to promote awareness about gender stereotypes and their role in identity at our headquarters. First, they implemented a group dynamic with 25 boys and girls of their age about the social roles latent in the sentences “Behave like a Man” and “Behave like a Woman”. Afterwards, they collected audio testimonies about behaviors associated with these gender stereotypes. Finally, these activities culminated in an artistic installation at the Aguada de Baixo Parish Council, as part of the parish celebrations on May 10th and 11th. So, it was indeed time to dot the i’s and cross the t’s!

Besides the 15 audios, the artistic installation included a blanket in the shape of a prison cell, whose bars were composed of social roles. According to visitors, the installation was a creative way to engage young people in identity issues and to promote reflection and informal discussion within the community.
