The Long-Term Volunteer Project “Little Lifeguards” is almost over, but our volunteer Diogo continues to build an intervention to raise awareness in our rural village about basic life support. As a matter of fact, this project is part of the IPDJ’s “OTL – Longa Duração” Program.

For approximately three months, “Little Lifeguards” has been underway in Aguada de Baixo, promoting knowledge about the human body, priority anatomical areas, and basic first aid techniques. In fact, through “Little Lifeguards,” Diogo aims to contribute to the development of more aware citizens, prepared to care for themselves and others, based on the principles of healthy behaviours and disease prevention.
Activities
a) Distribution of a questionnaire on the population’s residual knowledge of basic life support (BLS) in Aguada de Baixo. This questionnaire was distributed online and offline (hand-delivered to residents of the parish) and has so far received approximately 300 responses!
b) Practical workshops focused on basic life support, designed for children and young people. Participants learnt and practiced crucial BLS techniques, from recognizing emergencies and identifying signs of cardiopulmonary arrest to contacting emergency services quickly and effectively, providing accurate information. They also covered cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, including chest compressions and ventilation, tailored to their age group.
c) Development of a workshop dedicated to exploring creative ways to disseminate knowledge about basic life support (BLS). As a result, there’s a diversification of the content related to health on CAAB’s social media.
